Noxious Weed Control

Program Information

The CSRD established a Noxious Weed Control function with Bylaw No. 5110 in 1993. The goal of the Columbia Shuswap Regional District Noxious Weed Control Program is to prevent the spread of those weeds which may have a serious, detrimental effect on agricultural practices within the Regional District. The service was created to help reduce the negative impacts of noxious weeds by an annual inspection program of lands within the CSRD and enforcement of the Provincial Weed Control Act. The program is primarily complaint driven and focuses on species under the Weed Control Act.

The Bylaw allows for the requisition of funds through property tax to pay for this service in Electoral areas A, B, C, D, E and F and the municipalities of the City of Salmon Arm, the District of Sicamous, the City of Revelstoke and the Town of Golden. Since the establishment of the service, the program has expanded to include public information, biocontrol releases, community weed pulls and a sprayer loan-out program.

In 2013, the mandate of this program was transferred through contractual arrangement to a not-for-profit society called the Columbia Shuswap Invasive Species Society (CSISS).  The CSRD is one of many members of the society and one of many funding partners.  CSISS collaborates with many members and external stakeholders on the provision of services related to invasive plant and animal species management within the CSRD.
