Province tests Alert Ready May 4, Alertable still in use

Tuesday, May 3, 2022

The Provincial Alert Ready system will be tested on May 4 at 1:55 PM.

Many people will get the loud alert on their phones and, if you have the Alertable app, you will likely get the test alert through the app as well.

This is good!

There are a number of reasons why you want to receive both types of alerts.

In the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, both Alert Ready and the Alertable app will be used to notify you of urgent incidents where you may need to take quick action. This includes all the Electoral Areas A, B, C, D, E and F as well as the municipalities of the Town of Golden, City of Revelstoke, District of Sicamous and City of Salmon Arm.

The systems are used differently for different types of emergencies. The best way to get all relevant notifications is to download Alertable.

The CSRD will use Alertable for events like large fires, landslides, flooding, swimming advisories or boil water notifications. It will be used when Evacuation Alerts are issued in our region. The Provincial Alert Ready system will not be used to broadcast Evacuation Alerts.

The Provincial Alert Ready system is broadcast intrusive, which will interrupt your cell phone, radio and TV broadcasts without having to sign up. It has a strict and limited criteria for use and will only be used in BC for life-threatening situations involving floods, fires or tsunamis.

The Alertable app re-broadcasts Alert Ready notifications, so you may receive Alert Ready messages twice. However, it doesn’t work the other way around. You must subscribe to Alertable to receive Alertable-issued notifications.

It may seem silly to receive the same message twice from time to time, but there are benefits. The Alertable app can help when you are out of cell range, but are connected to internet. This happens, especially in rural areas of the CSRD. Emergency Management BC is supportive of the use of both systems together, with the thinking being it is better for people to be alerted twice than not at all.

If you get a test message on May 4 from Alert Ready on your phone, the Alertable app, or both, then the test worked!

Get Alertable and join the more than 12,500 current subscribers in the CSRD to receive notifications through the app, computer, text, email, landline or smart home speaker.
