Update: Repairs completed to Sorrento Water System

Friday, January 14, 2022

Update: 3:05 PM, Friday, January 14

Water service has been restored to the affected area of the Sorrento Water System.

Water users are reminded that they may notice discoloration from sediment in the water system. Discolored water comes from sediment getting stirred up when the water is turned on after an outage. This discoloration is not harmful, as the water has been disinfected.

Air may also be present in piping. Running a garden hose or cold water bathtub faucet for several minutes should eliminate both air and discoloration.

The CSRD thanks residents and businesses for their patience and cooperation during this temporary disruption to water service.

Update:

A temporary water shutdown is required for some users of the Sorrento Water System to repair waterlines. Water service will be turned off on Friday, January 14, 2022 from approximately 8 AM to 5 PM.

See the map below for the affected area.

To minimize the disruption:

  • Residents are advised to store enough water to exceed their needs during that time period. This is in case the water service interruption is longer than noted.
  • For drinking water, a good rule of thumb is to have approximately four litres of drinking water per person, per day. A good place to store water for the day is in the bathtub.
  • Once the water is off, a toilet will have one more flush because of the stored water in the toilet tank. After that, use buckets of stored water to flush toilets. A toilet will flush when a bucket of water (equivalent to approximately four litres of water) is dumped into the bowl.
  • Please do not use appliances that require water, including washing machines and dishwashers, during the shut-down hours.
  • Residents should also ensure that hot water tanks do not drain, as this could cause damage to the heating element.

Once service is restored, residents may notice discoloration from sediment in the water system. Discolored water comes from sediment getting stirred up when the water is turned on after an outage. This discoloration is not harmful, as the water has been disinfected. Air may also be present in piping. Running a garden hose or cold water bathtub faucet for several minutes should eliminate both air and discoloration.

The CSRD appreciates your patience and cooperation during this temporary disruption to water service.

Residents and businesses in the area of downtown Sorrento may be temporarily without water service or notice low water pressure this afternoon, Wednesday, January 12.

Crews are on scene attempting to find  and repair the source of a water leak in the Sorrento Water System. Water service will be affected for a few hours.

Once the leak is fixed and water pressure is restored, water users may notice some discolouration in their water as a result of sediment in the water system. This discolouration is not harmful, as the water has been disinfected and is safe to drink.

Air may also be present in the water pipes. Running a cold water bathtub faucet or an outdoor hose for several minutes, should eliminate both air and discolouration.

Additional work on the system may be needed in the coming days. The CSRD will post additional information about any other water service disruptions to this website and social media platforms.
