Power restored to Golden, Electoral Area A

Update: 9:30 PM

BC Hydro has provided an update that crews have been able to make repairs at the Golden Substation and they will begin restoring power to customers in Golden starting right away and expect to have all customers restored by 1 AM MST.⁣

Customers who had been restored earlier on Friday, when crews were able to reconfigure the system, will see an outage of approximately 30 minutes. This will help to gradually bring the system back to its original configuration and ensure they can safely restore power to all customers in the Golden area.

Update: 4 PM

BC Hydro continues to work on plans for restoration and estimates that some residents in Golden and Area A will likely be without power again over night.
 
The location of the Reception Centre will be moved to the Golden Library (819 Park Dr) and Lion’s Den (in the basement of the Library) to accommodate more people that need access to power, water and heat overnight. The Golden Food Bank has dropped off some ready-to-eat food and snack items as well as baby formula. If you require emergency access to food, please contact Laura Archer at 250-290-0467.

Residents of Golden and Electoral Area A, please note that as a result of a power outage, the Town of Golden is opening a Reception Centre for residents. 

With some residents expected to be without power for up to 24 hours, according to the BC Hydro outage map, the Town of Golden and the Golden and Area A Emergency Management Coordinator will be opening a reception center in Council Chambers at Town Hall (810 9th Ave S) for those that may need access to power, water or heat.⁣

If you plan to come to Town Hall, please use the entrance to Council Chambers located adjacent to Park Drive (across from Element Therapeutics). COVID-19 protocols will be in place and masks will be required.⁣

Please note that the Arena and the Mount 7 Rec Plex are both closed due to the power outage.⁣

Landfill open, payment affected

In addition the power is out at the Golden Landfill, so they can only accept cash, cheques and existing accounts. The landfill may need to shut down if power supplies can not be restored. The CSRD will update this information on its website and social media.

Prevent frozen pipes⁣

There are a number of steps you can take to help prevent your pipes from freezing during a winter power outage:⁣

  • If your home or business have had previous issues with pipes freezing, leave taps dripping and flush toilets hourly until heat is restored.⁣
  • If your home or business are without a heat source and indoor temperatures are expected to drop below 0C, leave taps dripping and flush toilets hourly until heat is restored.⁣
  • Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water supply lines in the garage.⁣


Signs of frozen pipes:⁣

  • No water or very little water coming out of your faucets. Check all faucets in the home.⁣
  • Frost on your internal pipes. If you have a large amount of frost on your main shut off valve or internal pipes you may have frozen pipes.⁣
  • Flooding. Frozen water can cause pipes to burst and cause flooding within your home.⁣


What to do if you have frozen pipes:⁣

Call a plumber! If your house or basement is flooding, turn off the main shut-off valve, or if you believe your pipes have frozen, call a plumber immediately. ⁣

If you know that your home doesn’t have a main shut-off inside or one that doesn’t operate, call the Town of Golden at 250-344-2271 to report the issue. ⁣
