In 2010, the first phase of the Salmon Arm landfill was closed and a series of gas collection wells were installed to capture methane gas, which is created by the breakdown of garbage in a closed landfill.
Through a partnership with FortisBC the methane gas collected is being processed and upgraded to pipeline quality, which is then being delivered to the FortisBC pipeline for distribution to homes and businesses in Salmon Arm.
This project has garnered national attention, is being used as a model to show other local governments that turning waste into resources is possible and has helped the CSRD become carbon neutral.
Since 2000, best practices in sustainable community development have been celebrated each year with the FCM Sustainable Community Award. The Awards are open to all municipal governments and their private sector partners. The landfill gas capture project was the 2012 winner in the waste category.
