Emergency Management
Public safety and the well-being of citizens is crucial function of local government.
The CSRD's Emergency Management Plan coordinates the response to and recovery from a significant emergency event or disaster through an Emergency Operation Centre (EOC). Personnel in the EOC are trained to investigate, plan and implement resources to help deal with the event and bring resources to those affected in all four phases of emergency management:
- Mitigation - Measures taken to reduce the risk and impact of an emergency.
- Preparedness - Plans to prepare for and cope with the impact of an emergency.
- Response - Action taken in direct response to an emergency.
- Recovery - Return of evacuees, psychosocial support, financial assistance, and reconstruction.
This is accomplished by maintaining effective emergency management organizations, with trained and practiced personnel and community volunteers, as well as maintaining up-to-date emergency plans.
The CSRD's Emergency Programs do not coordinate or facilitate the day-to-day emergency response activities of the RCMP, Fire Departments or BC Ambulance Service. The programs are designed to assist these agencies with the necessary resources required for an incident once they have exhausted their own. This may be in the form of special equipment or supplying extraordinary resources to a larger emergency effort.
