The Columbia Shuswap Regional Hospital District (CSRHD) boundaries are contiguous with that of Columbia Shuswap Regional District. The CSRHD is often referred to as the “old” Hospital District, as it was replaced as an operational Regional Hospital District when the Health regions were restructured in 1996. The CSRHD was divided up, with the eastern portion (Golden and Area A) joining the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District; the North Shuswap joining the Thompson Regional Hospital District, and the remainder formed part of a new Hospital District called the North Okanagan Columbia Shuswap Regional Hospital District. This new Hospital District is administered out of the Columbia Shuswap Regional District office in Salmon Arm, BC. A common question that is often asked since the creation of the new Hospital Districts is, why am I still paying taxes toward the “old” Columbia Shuswap Regional Hospital District? As an operational Hospital District prior to 1996, the CSRHD often borrowed funds to finance construction projects or equipment, as a funding partner for Health Facilities within the Regional District boundaries. It is some of this debt that remains, that must be repaid by the same constituents within the Columbia Shuswap Regional District. As of the year ending 2008, the debt that remains is $597,684, (which was for the construction of Bastion Place in Salmon Arm) and will paid off in approximately 5 years. At that time taxation to service this debt will cease, and the Columbia Shuswap Regional Hospital District will no longer exist.
